Loan watch: Mylchreest nets within 10 seconds

Our young striker Jackson Mylchreest found the back of the net with less than 10 seconds on the clock to help Berwick Rangers to a Lowland League win against Albion Rovers.

The 17-year-old’s determination allowed him to steal early possession before his pace sent him searing in between the opposition’s defence.

After having his initial attempt saved, Mylchreest reacted quickly to give his side the perfect start to the game on Saturday.

“It was straight from kick-off,” Mylchreest smiled. “Their midfielder has taken a heavy touch, I pressed and then their centre-halves were quite far apart.

“It fell perfectly for me and, while I should have scored the first attempt, I managed to get the rebound.

“Scoring a goal so early in the game gives you confidence and it helps to build your performance from there.”

Our players had a key impact on the game with defender Joe Ellison also on the scoresheet in the 2-1 victory.

“It wasn’t a great game and it was the last one of the season,” Mylchreest added.

“We still did well to get the result and I felt we played a lot better in the second half. Joe deserved his goal because he’s been good all season at centre-half or right-back.”

Mylchreest, who spent the first part of the season on loan at Tranent, feels his loan experiences have made him a more well-rounded player.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed my loan at Berwick. As soon as I went there, I played straight away. That gave me the confidence to go and help the team.

“It is more physical and you need to deal with that side of the game. Quality-wise, it is a step up too.

“There are a lot of boys who have played at a high level now dropping down to play in the Lowland League.

“And, on the other hand, you have the younger boys trying to make an impression. The whole experience has been a good one.”
