Chris began his senior career with Celtic but he left Parkhead in February 2003, without having played a first team game.

However, he didn’t have a problem playing regularly at his next port of call. He made his Morton debut away at Montrose on 25 February 2003 and played in the remaining 13 league fixtures as the Greenock side powered their way to the Third Division championship.

He was an ever-present in the season that followed as the Cappielow side comfortably held onto their new found Second Division status and he was only marginally less involved in the following 2004/2005 season , missing just two of the 36 fixtures and scoring 11 goals.

He missed just the one league game in 2005/2006 and then was involved in EVERY game the following season – leaving him with a remarkable run of involvement over four seasons of 141 appearances out of a possible 144 league fixtures.

It looked as if Chris would rack up another impressive tally of appearances for Morton in 2007/2008 but when it was announced in December 2007 that he had signed a pre-contract agreement with St Johnstone he found his involvement at Cappielow reduced and although he fought his way back into the side and was made another offer to remain in Greenock he officially signed on at McDiarmid Park on 1st May 2008.

Saints fans soon discovered why Derek McInnes was so keen to bring the player to Perth - a series of hugely influential and consistent performances in the middle of the park over the course of the Championship winning 2008/2009 season.

Considering he was a reasonably regular goal scorer in his time at Morton, perhaps the only disappointing aspect of his first season with Saints was his failure to find the net for some time but he finally put that right in Dumfries on 21st February 2009 when he scored in the 3-3 draw against Queen of the South.
